The Brandon Hospital emergency transport team gathered at HCA Healthcare’s Center for Clinical Advancement located in Brandon to train with the latest critical care technologies including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), heart pumps and ventilators. HCA Florida paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMT’s) received certification in critical care and were provided a safe hands-on environment to try more advanced procedures on mannequins.

“Emergency crews trained at this level are working on helicopter emergency care teams. We are bringing this training to ground transportation for HCA Healthcare. There are times when weather won’t allow for helicopters to take flight and there are times a patient’s weight is too heavy for a medical helicopter. Critical care ground training significantly expands our ability to do everything we can to save a patient’s life,“ said Justin Andrews, Lead Paramedic Emergency Department Transport. “To have all these representatives for these next level technologies here at HCA Healthcare’s simulation center to train our team, all in the same place in one day is extremely rare and an exciting opportunity for our team.”

The HCA Florida paramedic and EMT critical care training is a 10-month old program that is expanding the hospital’s ability to transport patients in need of the highest level of care.
